Trinity Episcopal Church is currently in a time of transition, awaiting a new Interim Rector. During this period, we are delighted to welcome The Rev. John Baker and The Rev. Philene Ward Dunn as our supply priests.
The Rev. John Baker grew up in West Tennessee and moved to our area in 1992 to attend Virginia Seminary. After serving a congregation in Memphis, John was called as rector of St. Aidan’s, Alexandria, where he served for 21 years before retiring in 2020.
He helped start the Center for Spiritual Deepening at St. Aidan’s, which continues to offer classes, speakers, and programs around a broad range of spiritual topics. He and his wife, Mary live near Mount Vernon. They have a daughter, Margie, who is a priest in West Hartford, CT, where she lives with her wife and two children. John and Mary enjoy grandparenting, reading, traveling, and wandering around in art museums. John continues to lead retreats and do supply work in the diocese.
Called out of retirement by God, Mother Philene+ quickly found herself surrounded by amazing and creative future leaders of the Episcopal church – seminarians, some half and even one-third her age - at Virginia Theological Seminary. Graduated and ordained in 2020 during the depths of COVID, she now serves as a supply and interim priest for the Diocese of Virginia where she enjoys sharing God’s message of Love, Peace, and Hope among the many vibrant parishes in her area.
Originally from the Rio Grande Valley - where Texas, Mexico, and the Gulf Coast meet – she also enjoys serving the Spanish-speaking community. Her husband, Paul, and she met on a blind date and on the 3rd date, eight days later, decided to marry. 43+ years, four grown children, and three grandchildren later, they find themselves not yet empty-nesters as they are sharing their Vienna, Virginia home with 4 rambunctious COVID kitties.
